The Hong Kong Stadium was built in 1952. Redeveloped by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) in 1992, it was re-opened in 1994 under the management of Wembley International, UK, engaged by the HKJC. In April 2015, the government partnered with the HKJC to conduct full reconstruction of the turf pitch as a long-term measure to enhance its quality and durability.
The Stadium has been designed and well-equipped for hosting a wide range of sporting, religious and community events. With a maximum seating capacity of 40 000, the Stadium is at present the largest outdoor multi-purpose recreation and sports venue in Hong Kong. The nearby So Kon Po Recreation Ground, serving as a supporting venue when major sports events are held in the stadium, is available for hire by organizations for sports competitions and training.
The stadium management takes pride in providing a quality venue for a variety of significant events held throughout the year, including the annual Hong Kong Sevens, Lunar New Year soccer tournaments, soccer exhibition matches, reunification celebration events, Walks for Millions, as well as a number of community and religious events.
