Located at the foot of Guia Hill, Jardim Vasco Gama is a park located in central Macau, right in front of Hotel Royal. The park was built in the 19th century when the street was still named Rua Nova de Vasco da Gama, hence its name. It was constructed in 1898 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s arrival to India. In 1911, the government erected a statue–built by sculptor Tomás da Costa–of the explorer to honor his accomplishments. There’s a statue of the explorer in the 500 sqm park. Some of the trees that were then planted are still there.
The park was much bigger than what one can witness now, previously occupying the area now featuring a public school, a police station, and Hotel Royal. Jardim Vasco da Gama was refurbished in 1997 with the addition of a fountain and several shaded areas for people to relax. This is one of Macau’s most popular children’s playgrounds. The park was remodeled again in 2004 and a car park was added below.
