Yau Kei Dragon Beard Candy is a local, traditional Macau brand founded in 1986 by a Macau resident. He started selling these traditional candies from a food stall on the streets; first close to the Red Market, later relocating to a proper shop in Village Mall, Rua do Campo. Yau Kei can now be found close to Albergue SCM, in a street leading to Kiang Wu hospital. It’s now located in St. Lazarus district.
Their main product is a sweet snack made with crushed coconut and peanuts and sesame seeds. It comes in boxes of six or more, with prices starting at MOP $28 per box. They also sell ice cream, which is a good choice for hotter days: there are tofu and chocolate flavors, which are then enveloped in the dragon’s beard candy. The shop is small yet welcoming, with a glass window from where one can see the chef preparing this snack, that’s made of a thin, dry dough on the outside, and crushed peanuts on the inside.
