Prosperity, by Caroline Cheng
This is one of Art Macao’s most striking artwork. Part of her Prosperity project, this work consists of intricately handmade porcelain butterflies sewn onto Chinese dresses. The artist had the idea after living in China for 10 years and her experiences were also channeled into her art. The dresses are like China: when looked at from afar, it seems to be a very homogenous country when in fact, it is actually very complex and is a huge melting pot of cultures and personalities. Cheng dubbed her beautifully embellished Chinese dresses “Prosperity” because “clothing” (服) and “prosperity” (福) are pronounced the same way–“fu”. The pieces are displayed all over Sands Macao properties, and also at the Macao Museum of Art.
