In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that has gripped the world, Macau remains one of the most resilient cities fighting the rise of coronavirus cases. The global health threat has spread to every continent except Antarctica as revealed by the World Health Organization (WHO). As we remain vigilant, we compiled certain facts from the WHO and Macau Health Bureau to keep all our readers informed. Macau Lifestyle Media strives to ensure that all information reported is accurate at the time of writing but for extra information and updates, please check accredited sources.
What is a coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.
What is COVID-19? And what are the symptoms?
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. The new virus and disease were unknown before December 2019. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell. Most people recover from the disease without needing special treatment. About two percent of people with the disease have died. People with fever, cough and difficulty breathing should seek medical attention.
How does COVID-19 spread?
People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales. These droplets land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch it by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth. People can also catch the disease if they breathe in droplets from a person with COVID-19 who coughs out or exhales droplets. This is why it is important to stay more than three feet (one meter) away from a person who is sick.
It’s understandable that you may feel stressed and anxious about the situation. However, it’s better to get the facts to help you accurately determine your risks so that you can take reasonable precautions. Your healthcare provider, national public health authority and employer are all potential sources of accurate information on COVID-19 and whether it is in your area. It is important to be informed of the situation where you live and take appropriate measures to protect yourself.

Basic Protective Measures Against The COVID-19
The best way to battle the COVID-19 outbreak is by staying aware of the latest information. Details are constantly available on the WHO website and through local public health authorities. Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:
- Wash your hands frequently. Do this regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
- Maintain social distancing. Maintain at least one meter (three feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain the virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.
- Practice respiratory hygiene. Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.
- If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early on. Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent the spread of viruses and other infections.
- Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow the advice given by your healthcare provider, national and local public health authority or employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. These are the entities that have the most up to date information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are the best sources of advice for people in your area on what they should be doing to protect themselves.
