As a large-scale international cultural and artistic event, Art Macao is back from July to October 2021, bringing an immersive cultural atmosphere to the entire city as a gallery and an art garden and showcasing the exciting Macao International Art Biennale 2021.
Art Macao presents 30 art exhibitions in 25 locations, bringing an immersive cultural atmosphere to the entire city as a gallery and an art garden, allowing the public to enjoy the beauty and vividness of art. This edition is curated by Professor Qiu Zhijie, one of the most influential contemporary artists in China and Dean of the School of Experimental Art of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, focusing on contemporary visual arts.
“Art Macao” is divided into several sections: Main Exhibition, Special Exhibition of Resorts and Hotels, Creative City Pavilion, Public Art Exhibition, Selected Works by Local Artists and Collateral Exhibition, aiming to reshape the humanistic spirit in the post-epidemic era.
The Awakening Lion Exhibition takes place at MGM Macau and MGM Cotai and features numerous works from the Chairman’s Collection, including important works by such preeminent artists as Cai Guo-Qiang, Wang Huangsheng, Liu Jianhua, Yu Yang, Yuan Jai, and Chloe Ho, as well as the imperial carpet of the Qing Dynasty – Five Lions. These grandiose exhibits all explore the old and new artistic traditions with the audience and broaden their mind and sight of the future.
Juxtapose is exhibited at Galaxy Macau. All the sculptures exhibited in Juxtapose depict Macau’s important architecture, icons, trades of the past, and festivals, all that define what Macau is today – juxtaposing east with west, new with old, traditional with modern, serious with humorous.
Art Macao will also be heading to Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace, where art aficionados will be amazed by Illusions and Reflections – Through the Eyes of the Masters. It showcases a wide range of world-renowned masterpieces of Chinese modern art, with a total of around 400 artistic treasures.
The Main Exhibition, themed “Advance and Retreat of Globalization”, is divided into three parts: “The Dream of Mazu”, “Matteo Ricci’s Labyrinth of Memory” and “Advance and Retreat of Globalization”, providing a space for reflection and discussion on globalization and individuality, life and dream, remoteness and proximity, security and happiness, among others. The Main Exhibition also echoes the geographical and cultural identities of Macau and triggers an in-depth dialogue between local and external artistic concepts in the globalization process.

Laying on the longitudes of different cities and in the latitudes of creativity, “Art Macao” not only hosts international masters and local celebrities but also attracts the participation of prestigious cities such as Macau, the City of Gastronomy; Nanjing, the City of Literature; Wuhan, the City of Design; Linz, the City of Media Arts. Whilst a point of convergence of unique cultural essences originating from various creative cities, Macau will once again become a great garden filled with artistic creativity. From July to October this year, Macau connects the whole world with creativity and allows the public to enjoy beauty and vividness. Create for the well-being of the world, create for the evolution of the world.
