Minimalistic yet abstract, clean yet quirky, H&M’s new studio SS18 collection has all the qualities of a high fashion brand with high street chic. The collection is highly influenced by Japanese fashion and effectively avoids the commonplace offense of cultural appropriation that so often occurs on the runway. A blessing for H&M given the recent outrage of a cultural faux pas in their childrenswear line dominating the news earlier this year. The new studio line debuted at Paris Fashion Week in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, where H&M sponsored a huge exhibition on Japan that opens later in the year.
Combining defined silhouettes and clean cuts with relaxed tailoring and casual items, the collection perfectly embodies the modern metropolis of Japanese cities with the country’s concept of ‘ma’ (theory of minimalism which dominates the interior design, cuisine, and popular culture). The lookbook, featuring models Clement Chabernaud, Shanelle Nyasiase and Saskia de Brauw, represents abstract minimalist fashion.
Here are some of our favorite pieces and how to wear them.
The Flared Trouser
Flares dominate both the collection and high street trends this season. H&M’s Studio SS18 still presents the flare as a fun item but pairs them with workwear. For a casual yet fierce look, wear the Studio SS18 full outfit of black flared trousers with matching long shirts (left image). The abstract extended top looks quirky with the slit trouser. For a more playful but confident look, the black and white patterned trouser can be matched with any plain black top and a statement necklace. Works as both day and evening wear.
The Knit
We expect this piece to be popular with Macau’s fashionistas. Reminiscent of abstract impressionist pattern, yet modern with oversized sleeves this is a contemporary piece to outlast the final days of winter. Pair with baggy jeans for a relaxed daytime look or wear over a black dress as a statement pullover.
The Dress
An absolutely showstopping piece, this dress is our favorite in the collection. The bold color and statement print featuring throughout the collection will be a special addition to any wardrobe. Made from a soft, thin material it is the perfect mix of boisterousness and delicacy. For a young and chic daytime look, wear with sneakers and a mini leather backpack. If you are in the mood for an extravagant evening look fit for a night out, dorn it with a tight belt at the waist and a bold, red lips.
