This month, we round-up the best art exhibitions in the city. Making personal reflections of our own and remembering moments of joy and sadness or failure and triumphs, we merge our own perceptions with the artists and their thought-provoking creations on these five special exhibitions in Macau.

(Featured image above)
The Cultural Affairs Bureau presents the exhibition “Debris Works by Alexandre Farto aka Vhils”, featuring more than 20 works including four new public murals, inspired by Macau. The show will take place at the Navy Yard No.1 Contemporary Art Center. The exhibition is organized by Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and co-organized by Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation (HOCA), supported by Fundação Oriente, Consulado Geral de Portugal em Macau e Hong Kong.
Vhils’ show in Hong Kong was listed by CNN as one of “2016’s most visually inspiring moments”. Building on last year’s momentum, “Debris” in Macau will further unveil the often forgotten collective memory and history of the city through the lens of the artist, exposing a specific moment in global development and the artist’s own history and identity alongside his subjects. The show continues to represent HOCA’s vision and mission to promote awareness and access to contemporary art.
The exhibition is open daily from 10:00am to 7:00pm except on Mondays.

MACAO ARTS WINDOW 2017 – HUNDRED SPECIES – WORKS OF PEGGY CHAN
Born in Macao, Peggy Chan received her Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts) degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, with her studio at the Cattle Depot Artists’ Village (Hong Kong). Her works include paintings, photographs, videos and installations, inspired by her daily life and imagination, exploring the triangular relationship between the individual, the city, and nature.
Cyanotype, the traditional photographic printing process, has been Peggy Chan’s favorite medium in her recent works. Highly relied on sunlight and time in the creation process, the works incorporate the uncertainty of nature and signify how our lives flow along with the ever-changing environment.

OUR BELLE ÉPOQUE MACAO – THE WORKS OF LEO FAN
Taking the blue sky and the white flowers as the fundamentals of the paintings by Leo Fan, such recurring elements reflect the artist’s perceptions of the future. Fan’s allusions are also outlined through his ever-changing style of artistic presentation. The thematic subject of the works showcased in this exhibition is “face” where each and every portrait is embedded with a touching story. The traces of every single human being’s hard work in this unadorned world is marked. Some of them may achieve fame for themselves, while others remain anonymous; their persistence and faith are beyond materialistic pursuits. It is precisely the passion of these individuals that Leo Fan glorifies as the “Honourable Souls”.
When: 12:00pm – 7:00pm, May 27 – June 25, 2017
Where: 2F Gallery of Ox Warehouse, 87-97 Av. do Cel. Mesquita, Santo Antonio, Macau

THE ART OF ZHANG DAQIAN
The Macao Museum of Art under the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S. A. R. Government has been dedicated to fostering domestic and international art exchanges as well as promoting splendid Chinese culture. Since its opening in 1999, the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) has organized, under the generous support of museums and other cultural entities from Mainland China, multiple large-scale calligraphy and painting exhibitions that have showcased masterpieces of epochal significance in the history of Chinese fine arts. The events have garnered a wide enthusiastic response from academic circles and art lovers from around the world. This year, with a focus on Zhang Daqian (1899 – 1983), MAM joins hands with the Sichuan Museum to present ‘The Art of Zhang Daqian’. Zhang Daqian had been one of the most influential painters and calligrapher in contemporary art history with his unparalleled artistic style.
This exhibition features a total of 100 pieces (sets) including his emulations of Dunhuang murals, landscape and figure paintings before and after his journey to Dunhuang, line drawings, correspondences and the seals he used. These seals, reflecting his philosophy of life and art, were mainly created by famous seal carvers, while two pieces carved by Zhang Daqian himself reveal the artist’s profound artistic accomplishment.
