Located a few steps away from Hotel Riviera, the residence of the Consul General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong is set in the former Bela Vista Hotel. With breathtaking views over the city, it sits in Penha area, close to monuments such as the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha and others. The colonial-style building has been revamped several times but still features traces of this period.
This big house was handed back to the Portuguese in 1999 and is now known as the residence of the Portuguese Consul General in Macau. Although it’s usually closed to the public, the representative opens its doors to welcome Portuguese residents for the celebrations of June 10, the Day of Camões, Portugal, and the Portuguese Communities. On this day, the Consul opens its gates and organizes a gathering with finger food and cocktails for people to mingle and celebrate in the panoramic balcony overlooking the city.
There are other important spots nearby, such as former Santa Sancha Palace–now the residence of Macau’s Chief Executive–and several other villas where important government members live during their mandates. When walking down the road, one will spot Sai Van Lakes, Macau Tower and scenic views featuring Nam Van. There’s also a hotel a few steps away in the same street, Riviera Hotel.
