The internationally renowned Three Phantoms musical made its Macau debut at the Parisian on Friday, March 3. The show, which features a “best of” selection of famous Broadway and West End musical hits, will run until March 26.
The three male leads—Kieran Brown, David Shannon, and Earl Carpenter (who is also the director)—have all played the leading role in Phantom of the Opera, hence the name “Three Phantoms.” We enjoyed the warmth they brought to their stage presence and their respective roles; they were able to really put the audience at ease and establish a genuine connection.
Of course, the audience was also comforted by familiarity with well-known selections from Phantom, Cats, Les Misérables, Mamma Mia!, and Wicked, as well as pop songs such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Don’t Stop Believing”. We liked the accompanying orchestra, which worked well with the vocalists both in the classics and the pop.
Songs included “Tragedy” (Saturday Night Fever), “Bui Doi” (Miss Saigon), “Anthem” (Chess), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (We Will Rock You), “Defying Gravity” (Wicked), “Dreamed A Dream” / “Stars” / “A Heart Full of Love” / “Bring Him Home” / “One Day More” (Les Misérables), “Memory” (Cats), “A Guy Like You” (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), “This Is the Moment” (Jekyll & Hyde), “The Music of the Night” (The Phantom of the Opera), and “For Good” (Wicked).
All three male leads played the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, with thousands of hours of performance time between them. This was something they actually joked about in one of their witty asides to the audience. Kieran Brown (from Scotland), David Shannon (Ireland), and Earl Carpenter (UK) have also all performed in Les Miserables.
In addition to the three male leads, female stars include Olivia Brereton, Rachel Chapman, Maris McIntyre, Joanna Walters, and Lisa-Anne Wood.
