BloomBox Hong Kong is the brainchild of Adriana Lica, who developed the business in October 2016. “I was teaching my students at General Assembly about search traffic on Google and as we were looking at various keyword trends, I noticed that there was a high demand for flower delivery options. After a quick assessment of the competition, I realized nobody in the market was offering a user-friendly experience, as well as creative flower gift options. Being an entrepreneur at heart, I decided to try and fill that gap”. The name came to her instantly. “I thought, blooms in a box, and so the name and my startup BloomBox was born”. With the local market and traditions in mind, Adriana wanted to create something unique and creative so she combined beautifully crafted dim sum boxes with flowers.
Can you tell us a memorable message someone sent with their flowers?
I have an operations team that runs everything, but every morning I take five minutes to check on our customers—their needs, their feedback, issues and their messages. Their messages, in particular, make my day, because they remind me just how much love and care there is all around us. For example, the loveliest recent message was from a girl to her boyfriend telling him to keep his head up during a rough week at work. Another one this week was actually from a guy in New York that was telling his mom how much he missed and loved her, and that he’s the man he is today all thanks to her. I’m not ashamed to admit that sometimes the messages make me cry from happiness for these customers and that BloomBox is part of making somebody’s day awesome.
Why the boxes? How do you source them?
Sustainability is incredibly important to me and I try to source everything locally. The boxes, for example, are made by hand by a local craftsman. I pay a premium to get these handmade, but supporting the community where I live, while keeping my business as green as possible, has no price.
What makes a BloomBox special?
Every BloomBox is special because it’s the only flower shop in HK with sustainability and community in mind. Plus, you can’t get flowers in a dim sum box delivered straight to your friend’s office, home, or basically anywhere you are in HK anywhere else other than BloomBox. We’ll even deliver them to a restaurant while you’re out on a date. It’s happened before!
